Borrower Guide
Use this guide when you’re asking someone you trust to add you as an authorized user so we can
strengthen your credit profile for your mortgage.
Fast track • Often updates your score within 30–60 days (depending on reporting cycles)
How It Works
Authorized User Basics
An Authorized User (AU) is someone who is added to an existing credit card account.
You do not need access to the physical card, and you do not need to use it.
The primary cardholder simply adds your name so their positive history can appear on your credit report.
- Can boost your score faster than many other strategies
- Helps your credit utilization and mix of credit
- Strengthens your profile for approvals and pricing

Sample Script to Ask Someone You Trust
“Hey! I’m working on improving my credit so I can qualify for my mortgage.
One of the quickest ways to boost my score is to be added as an
authorized user on a well-established credit card.
You wouldn’t need to give me access or let me use the card at all – it would only help my credit profile.
If you’re comfortable, it would really help me take the next step toward getting approved.”

What They May Need to Add You
Each credit card company is a little different, but commonly they’ll ask for:
- Your full legal name
- Your date of birth
- Your mailing address
Your Social Security Number is sometimes requested but is
not always required for authorized user status.
Next Step
After You’ve Been Added
Once you’ve been successfully added as an authorized user:
- Make a note of the date you were added.
- Let me know so I can time when we re-check your credit.
- Keep your own accounts paid on time and balances low.
Together, we’ll decide the best timing to move forward on your mortgage based on when the
new information is likely to show on your credit report.
Common Questions
FAQs About Being an Authorized User
Will this hurt their credit?
No. Their score is based on their own usage and history. You are simply being added to an already positive account.
Are they responsible for your other debts?
No. This does not link them to any of your existing accounts or obligations.
Can they remove you later?
Yes. They can call the card company at any time and ask to remove you as an authorized user.
